We at the Derby Hippodrome Restoration Trust have a two stage strategy for transforming the derelict Derby Hippodrome Theatre back into a beautiful entertainment venue which Derby can be proud of.

Working with the building owner we have consulted surveyors and representatives of the Heritage Lottery Fund and will be applying for HLF funding in 2022 to conduct the first phase of the restoration.

New Hippodrome

By the end of 2023 we aim to have completed a basic restoration of the Hippodrome which would include dismantling some of internal structures where appropriate, rebuilding damaged walls, replacing the roof and re-establishing essential facilities such as toilets, lighting, water and heating. The building will then become a flexible space which can be used by amateur performing arts groups in Derby and become a focal point in the local community. The theatre is a key building within St Peter’s Quarter and as such its restoration would have a huge positive impact on the local community, the aesthetics of Green Lane and the economy of St Peter’s Quarter. It is an achievable ambition with a big impact.

Once the theatre has begun to generate its own income the DHRT will begin to work with its partners towards raising the capital for the full restoration. This will include a tiered auditorium, the backstage infrastructure for putting on larger productions including grand opera and ballets and may also include a roof top restaurant that takes advantage of the very attractive vantage point over the Cathedral Quarter of Derby.
